Modular vs Carpenter Kitchens in Delhi NCR

Honest, on-the-ground comparison from a Delhi studio that builds both. Real ₹ per running foot, how each holds up across a Delhi summer and monsoon, and how long each takes from sign-off to handover.

The short answer

For most Delhi NCR homes between ₹15 L and ₹75 L interior budgets, a factory-built modular kitchen in BWR ply or HDHMR with PU / acrylic finish is the better long-term spend. Carpenter-made kitchens still make sense in two narrow cases: a tight starter budget under ₹1.5 lakh, or a heritage / odd-shaped space where every cabinet has to be custom-cut on site.

Cost — what you actually pay in Delhi NCR

These numbers come from the same dataset that powers our Interior Cost Calculator — averaged across 30–50 lakh projects we have executed in Delhi, Gurugram and Noida between 2023 and 2025.

TierModular (₹ / running ft)Carpenter (₹ / running ft)Typical total (10 ft kitchen)
Essential — MR ply, laminate₹1,800 – ₹2,400₹1,400 – ₹1,900₹1.5 – ₹2.5 L
Premium — BWR ply, PU finish₹2,800 – ₹3,800₹2,200 – ₹3,000₹3 – ₹4.5 L
Signature — HDHMR, acrylic / lacquered glass₹3,800 – ₹4,500Not advisable on-site₹5 – ₹6.5 L
Bespoke — imported veneer, Blum / Hettich₹5,500+₹8 L+

Carpenter-built kitchens look 15–25% cheaper on day one. By year 7 most of that gap is eaten by re-polishing, hinge / channel replacement and shutter swelling at the bottom rows.

Durability in Delhi's climate

Delhi puts cabinetry through a brutal cycle — 45°C dry summers, monsoon humidity above 80%, and winter condensation around the sink and hob. That cycle is where the two approaches separate.

Modular

  • BWR / HDHMR cores rated for moisture, factory edge-banded on all four sides
  • PU or acrylic finishes resist humidity, oil and abrasion for 10+ years
  • Soft-close Blum / Hettich hardware with manufacturer warranty
  • Replaceable shutters and accessories — modules can be swapped, not rebuilt

Carpenter

  • On-site ply, often with exposed bottom edge that wicks monsoon moisture
  • Laminate or membrane finish — visible joints, swells around the sink in 3–5 years
  • Local hardware, typically no written warranty
  • Repairs mean carpentry re-work on site, not a part swap

When carpenter-made still wins

  • Sub-₹1.5 lakh budget where modular minimum order pricing doesn't fit.
  • Heritage homes or odd-angle layouts where every module is custom anyway.
  • Pure-wood, hand-carved aesthetics that factory lines don't produce.

FAQ

Which lasts longer in a Delhi flat — modular or carpenter?

A premium modular kitchen with BWR/HDHMR core and PU finish comfortably crosses 10 years with no swelling. On-site ply kitchens usually need bottom-row repair within 5–6 monsoons.

Can Metaphore retrofit a modular kitchen into an existing flat?

Yes — most of our Gurugram and Noida projects are retrofits into existing 3BHKs. Tear-out, plumbing/electrical re-work and modular installation typically takes 3 weeks.

Do you offer EMI or stage-wise payment?

Standard payment is 40% on order confirmation, 40% on factory dispatch, 20% on installation completion. EMI is available on partner cards above ₹3 lakh.
